Considerable savings during autumn
From September through November 2025, Dutch homeowners saved an average of 21,4% on heat pump electricity costs through automatic price-based control.
These figures are based on households that have connected the HeatAdapt smart module to their heat pumps.
The principle of dynamic electricity pricing is simple: prices on EPEX Spot change throughout the day. The larger the difference between cheaper and more expensive periods, the more valuable it becomes to choose the right moment to heat the home.
HeatAdapt automatically shifts heat pump consumption to more favourable periods, using day-ahead electricity prices together with the heating needs of the home.
The best savings opportunities are not only in the evening
It is easy to think of high electricity prices as an evening problem. Dutch data from last autumn shows a different picture.
61,6% of the consumption HeatAdapt shifted happened outside the 17:00–22:00 evening period. The morning was actually the single biggest optimisation window, accounting for 42,6% of shifted consumption.
This means that simply setting a timer to avoid the evening peak would miss a large part of the available opportunity.
The best windows can appear several times a day
Electricity prices do not follow exactly the same pattern every day. A favourable heating window might appear in the morning, around midday or later in the evening.
Last autumn, HeatAdapt adjusted heat pump consumption in two or more separate periods on 76% of days. That is where automatic control makes a difference: instead of relying on fixed times of day, HeatAdapt automatically adapts the heating schedule to opportunities in the electricity market.
Your home stores the heat for later
HeatAdapt is designed for air-to-water and ground source heat pumps. Its algorithms combine dynamic electricity prices with weather forecasts and the heating needs of the home to build a suitable schedule for each day.
A home and its heating system act as a thermal battery. Heating a little more while electricity is favourably priced, then easing off as prices rise, moves consumption without changing how warm the house feels. Where the heat pump also produces domestic hot water, the same principle applies to the tank.
Get ready before the heating season starts
As autumn progresses, heating becomes an increasingly important part of household electricity consumption. That makes the period before the main heating season the right moment to switch on automatic price-based control.
Savings from the HeatAdapt module are specific to each building and depend on the level of insulation, the heating system as a whole, consumption patterns, and future spot electricity prices on the dynamic electricity market.
