# HeatAdapt

> HeatAdapt is a smart control module for residential air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps. It schedules the heat pump against dynamic electricity prices on Nord Pool and EPEX Spot, shifting heating to off-peak periods to lower the heat pump's annual electricity costs by 14–24% on average (up to 31% in volatile-price months) without affecting comfort.

HeatAdapt is a product of Eleflex.AI, designed and manufactured in the EU. Compatible with 25+ heat pump brands across air-to-water and ground source. Available in 14 European countries (Nord Pool: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; EPEX Spot: Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Poland).

In most homes the heat pump accounts for 50–80% of annual electricity consumption, so even a small percentage saving on heating adds up over the year.

## How it works

Each day HeatAdapt loads day-ahead electricity prices over WiFi and combines them with the weather forecast, the heat pump's expected coefficient of performance (COP) at the outdoor temperature, and the building's thermal properties. From those inputs it builds a daily heating and hot-water schedule: the heat pump runs during lower-cost periods and cuts back during the most expensive ones.

For homes with solar panels, HeatAdapt also reads the solar production forecast and shifts heating into surplus-PV windows so the household self-consumes more of its own generation.

## What HeatAdapt is NOT

- Not a smart thermostat. It controls the heat pump via the manufacturer's published smart-grid input (e.g. SG-Ready), without replacing the thermostat.
- Not tied to a specific energy retailer. It reads the day-ahead market itself and works with any dynamic-price contract on Nord Pool or EPEX Spot.
- Not a battery. It does not store energy; it shifts heating in time.
- Not a replacement for the heat pump's own controls. Comfort and frost protection stay with the heat pump itself.

## Environment

By cutting consumption during peak-price periods, HeatAdapt shifts heating into windows when the grid mix carries a higher share of renewable generation. More of the heating runs on green energy, and the carbon footprint per kilowatt-hour drops.

## Provenance

The control logic was developed in a 12-month applied research study with university researchers, across more than ten Nordic homes during the 2023/24 heating season.
